Dyslexia, ADHD and Working in the Maritime Industry

Dyslexia is often associated with schoolchildren, but its impact can continue throughout adulthood, including for people working in highly skilled and technical professions.

In the December 2021 edition of The Islander, a Mallorca-based yachting magazine, yacht engineer Peter Kennedy shared his experiences of living and working with dyslexia and ADHD.

A Personal Story

In the interview, Peter spoke openly about his career in the maritime industry, his experiences of dyslexia and ADHD, and the ways in which these learning differences had influenced his life.

Despite experiencing difficulties with traditional academic learning, he developed a successful career in yachting, demonstrating that learning differences do not prevent individuals from developing considerable practical knowledge and professional expertise.

Peter also described attending specialist dyslexia and sensory learning sessions with Anita Vince at Dysl3xia in Mallorca, where they were working together to explore learning strategies suited to his individual needs.

Why Adult Dyslexia Assessment Matters

Many adults have developed effective ways of managing their difficulties without necessarily understanding their underlying learning profile.

A specialist diagnostic dyslexia assessment can help identify strengths and areas of difficulty, provide a clearer understanding of learning needs, and inform recommendations for study, professional qualifications and workplace support.

At Dysl3xia, I provide specialist diagnostic dyslexia assessments for children, young people and adults in Mallorca, including those preparing for examinations or undertaking further professional training.
